A quality mount begins with proper field care
Outlined below are some tips on proper field care. If you find yourself unable to immediately take your trophy to your taxidermist, the following tips will help ensure that your trophy will be in the best condition possible for the taxidermist.

A professional taxidermist should skin coyote-size and smaller mammals that are intended for taxidermy mounts. A poor skinning job will ruin the hide for a mount. If the outside air temperature is below 40 degrees, the animal can be left unfrozen if it will reach the taxidermist in less than 1 day. If the temperature is above 40 degrees or it will be several days until the animal is taken to a taxidermist it should be immediately frozen. Allow the animal to cool in the freezer for a couple of hours, then double plastic bag the animal and return it to the freezer. If you are planning a hunt for larger mammals such as bear or mountain lion, please contact me, and I can advise you on proper skinning procedures for your trophy.
